$1,050 towards $2,000

Hello friends and family,

This year I am running the Baltimore Half Marathon on October 21st and dedicating my effort to raising money to support research for celiac disease. Celiac is a genetic autoimmune disease affecting more than 3 million Americans and there is no cure. As of right now the only treatment is a gluten-free diet.

Celiac disease is very personal for me and my family. Let me start by saying that many of you may read this and think being gluten-free is just a "fad diet", but after visiting my sister Kiley this summer I witnessed firsthand the immense challenges that she and everyone affected by celiac disease face daily. Just one crumb of gluten will make my sister physically ill and sometimes lasts for days. I feel as though you don't hear about celiac disease until someone you know is diagnosed. This disease can be very serious and for the people affected, the gluten-free diet is certainly not a fad.

Most of us are so fortunate that we can eat and drink what we want, anywhere we want, without worry or fear. Not so for Kiley. Her preparation to go out to eat is stressful and time consuming. Each evening before we would go out, she had to research the restaurant for gluten-free options and to see if they understood how to prepare gluten-free food safely to avoid cross contamination with foods containing the gluten protein. I kept imagining what it would be like as a child affected by celiac disease. You're invited to a birthday party and you are not able to eat regular pizza or the cupcakes or cake like everyone else. How would you not feel isolated, deprived or sad? Different. Definitely not fun.

I am running to raise money for Beyond Celiac, a not-for-profit dedicated to accelerating research to find new treatments and a cure. Their vision statement says it all. That we should live in "a world in which people with celiac disease can live healthy lives, free from social stigma and fear of gluten exposure – A World Beyond Celiac."

My goal is to raise $2,000. Thank you in advance for helping me, my sister Kiley, and the 3 million people waiting for a cure. Let's do this!
